Shells will help in the hardness and in keeping the ph up. You can even use crushed coral in your tank to help in that area. I may be mistaken, but I believe it would be better not to use RO water for cichlids, because you are actually removing the minerals they need. You can also buy Lake Tanganyikan buffer, which supposedly adds the correct minerals.
