Loach killing spree

I just watched my four clown loaches attack and almost kill my pl*co. They have already killed swordtails, mollies, Angels, etc. in the past. I then realize that it may be because I purposely stopped feeding them vegetables. I heard veggies act like tranquilizers to some loaches, is this true? I saved my pl*co by putting in a piece of zucchini and now the loaches are too busy munching on it and are distracted from finishing off the pl*co. Any thoughts?
