Niels, you've got to tell those kids which fish you want! If they get snarky ask for the manager and then go to great pains to inform him/her of their staff's incompetence. I never take any sh*t when I buy fish, I guess most stores hate me :) but they don't complain when they see the color of my money.
Here's one example of a conversation between me and the saturday boy who I persuaded to serve me...
Me: 4 praecox please.
Boy: How long has your tank been set up?
Me: Which one?
Boy: umm...you have more than one?
Me: Yes, my current tanks have been set up for about 10 years
Boy: oh. What else is in the tank?
Me: Four cory. Melini and a couple of Werneri.
Boy: I don't know how big they grow...
Me: What? The Werneri?
Boy: Nah, the rainbowfish...
Me: Werneri *are* rainbowfish... the praecox grow to about 5-6cm.
Boy: Oh. Do you do water changes often?
Me: Kid, if you haven't already worked it out, I've been fishkeeping for longer than you've been on this planet. Catch The Fish.
He then prceeded to stab at the rainbow fish with the net, mad swipes left and right across the tank. He hadn't got a clue what he was doing so I let him catch 3 which took about 20 minutes then I finally had enough and told him to put them back. :) I think the expression that comes to mind is "I don't suffer fools".
