Ok, I've watched my little (well, not-so-little) fellows for a while, been woken up several mornings by the loud clattering from my loach tank, and I've gotten curiouser and curiouser (to abuse Alice in Wonderland) but I have no concrete idea of _why_ my guys click. It seems to be mostly in the morning, and while (at first) I thought it only happened when they were playing around on the surface (which, for some reason, my loach-pack likes to do sometimes) yesterday morning they woke me up clicking and none of them were near the surface (as far as I could tell, it was early and it was a while before the REAL alarm clock would go off).

Does anyone know anything about this interesting habit, or could point me in the direction of publications talking about it? I've tried asking my loaches but they just all give me the fish-eye from inside their largest driftwood cave (playing "how many clown loaches can we pack into the smallest cave we can find")...
