I think I might have found something !

Going through the PFK tonight, someone wrote in about a Paradise fish:

"One of the paradise fish in my community tank has become lethargic, and now I notice a small "tuft" growing around its anal area, with what appear to be small red "spikes" protruding from it. These seem stiff and I can only compare them to the needles on a small cactus. The fish is now barely feeding and spends most of its time hiding."

Response: "The most problable cause of the red spikes is a roundworm, Camallanus. In tropical fish, these most commonly infest livebearing species such as Guppies. Adult worlms live and breed in the fish's gut, but some may actually protrude from the anus......"
