how many otocinclus?

I went to my lfs today to give them my nippy blue tetra (sniff, sniff) and look for some otocinclus for my algae problem. They don't have any in at the moment, but perhaps this week. They suggested I should get about 5 or 6, and introduce them only a couple at a time. I told him I only have a 10 gallon, and it already has a betta, 4 tetras, 2 shell dwellers and a golden dojo. That sounds to me like too many fish in the tank but I don't know. He said I needed that many to handle the algae. Any thoughts on that?
