Bacteria and Gravel

This may sound like a dumb question, but I'm going to ask it anyway. How long will the bacteria that is growing in the gravel live if removed and transported about 12 hours? I'm assuming that the bacteria is basically only on the top layer, since it needs some similance of oxygen to survive. So if you put it in a bucket, even covered with water and running an air stone, is the baceria going to sufficate? Am I wasting my time trying to keep it alive? Thanks for any input.
