ClownLoaches in Rift Lake Tank

I posted awhile ago regarding clowns with Cichlids. The problem I was having before was regarding feeding, I have found a discipline that now feeds everyone. My questions now, however, is that the water needs of the two species is rather different. My cichlids prefer pH 8 and Hardness of 10 dKH. Clowns prefer pH 6.5 or so and soft water. Is this an iron clad recommendation?

The reason I am asking, is that I am considering returning them to the LFS. Should I? I like the clowns a lot and they are more-or-less getting along with my Malwi cichlids. I want them to be happy. Are my water parameters stressing them too much?

Please advise...
