I do not have any tanks with that spec, but I would say it should work. You will see different well slower growths, and maybe not get the same plants to grow, but it works. A reccomendation would be to buy a glass canopy, pretty cheap. Then you can use the existing strip light and add another now or later when you want/can. The advantage of the glass canopy is then the entire top of the tank is glass and you can lay lights right ontop.
