kuhli loaches and gravel

My LFS has some Kuhli loaches swimming around and I liked them alot, from what I saw there. Since I am looking for some fish that eat food off the bottom, and they seem to match the condition of my water, however, I am worried about them digging up my plants as I've read alot about the tunnelling behavior of various loaches in general. The ones I saw at my LFS were all swimming on top of the gravel. They use the same gravel that I have, #3 natural. Do the Kuhli loaches like to dig, anybody have a solution for this? My plants are not potted and I don't have a substrate, so basically, my plants are held down by gravel...

thanks Jay
