Dead Loach

I recently lost a clown loach in my 50 gallon aquarium. It was in a school of 5 loaches and some other cichlids, etc.
All have been healthy for bout a year and a half.
I had just done a water change (50%), and when I came back to the tank after a few minutes, he was lying on his side, and definitely dead, not resting like they are known to be usually.
When I picked him out of the tank, he was covered with a thick clear slime. I then disposed of the body.
Is this normal? Can anyone give me insight into the cause of his death. The other loaches appear to be fine.
