undergravel filter modification

I'm new to this forum and i have an idea that applies to undergravel filters. I have a octopus in a salt water aquarium and they are known to deflate and borrow under the filter. to stop this i've laid a thin layer of pebbles over the undergravel and then covered it with a thin layer of filter matting, and cover the rest with about an 1.5 inch layer of sand. this keeps the sand from falling through the filter. next use a small bead of silicone around the base of the plates this can easily be removed when needed and silicone is relatively cheap.
