Do plants and clowns mix?

How on earth do some of you manage to keep a planted tank with clowns in it? In the feeding frenzies of the past few days, my clowns (one 6-inch, one 5-inch, and six 2-inch) have managed to uproot or tear apart all but two of my plants.

What's the key to keeping the plants and the clowns healthy? More surface area on the bottom? Are there certain plants that work better? Should I put the plants in the middle and leave the areas around the edges empty for swimming space? I'm at a loss.
