How much light?

OK, I'm thinking of setting up another tank and this time I would like a fully, naturally, planted one. The problem is my past experience showed that a single tube in a 36" (15" deep) tank wasn't enough light to keep them growing properly and I was beset with wilting, brown patches etc...

So, how do I calculate how much light I need and how may and what lenght of tube it converts to? I know there are a number of web sites with lots of detail, but I was kind of hoping that someone out there had practical rather than mathmatical advice.

Thanks

Alistair
