EVERY RTBS I've ever seen has been just that in colour, even if poorly, so I'd seriously question the female theory, Aaron. However, if your friend has experience I'm not going to poo-poo the opinion too much as actually seeing the fish is real important. I suppose it could be some kinda colour sport.........or maybe the phantom-fish dyers are using bleach now!!!!!! Remember your girlfriend said she saw some red in the tail at some time.
