My Poor little gray Clown

Hey,
We have 2 loaches. (purchased at different times)

The first loach (#1) has grey stripes now and not the black stripes as I remember him having.

I noticed that he was starting to 'grey' at one point about a week or two after I bought him (December 98), but sometimes he seemed to be more black

now we have added the second loach (#1) and he is definitely black while #1 is grey.

I thought maybe he would adapt to the same pale grey as #1 but he hasn't.

#2 stays black, #1 grey.

WHAT IS THIS? Male/Female distinction? Sickness?
