Fish anatomy

My fish doesn't seem interested in eating anymore...is startled by the food pellets hitting him..I am checking for poor water quality,etc..but I wondered if fish can smell? More detail I think he may be blind but wonder if he could smell food if I dropped it in....Thanks in advance..
