Out of tank experiences.

The worst I ever saw loachwise was a group of kuhli nesting in the white floss of bubble up filters. I know it might sound a bit antiquaited but one of the best (if not the best) lfs close to where I live uses old slate bottom tanks with rusting frames (the name for this style is escaping me at the moment), no substrate, and bubble up filters. Water changes are daily and a diatom filter makes its rounds each day. You can't argue with what works. In the in-tank filters some had even managed to get into the very bottom and were resting in the carbon. The carbon realy showed off the orange coloration:) Just to be on the safe side I slide the smallest ovation replacement sponge over the intake of my powerfilters prefilter strainers, pinched it and rubberbanded it. No kuhli chop sui tank you. I just began keeping them so of course I'm extra cautious.
A while back (years ago) I saw H. orthogoniata (saddleback loach) in a lfs. I didn't buy them and waited until I found out some information before buying them. Bad move on my part. Either somebody else knew about them or decided to just take a chance. They were gone when I returned. Lesson learned there. The store owner told me he was glad to "get rid" of them. In the short time he had them in his store they managed to enter the central filtration for one of the freshwater racks and visit a half dozen of the tanks on that system. They liked to enter the clear plastic id tubes, swim against the flow of water and spend quiet time in the pvc pipes. One man's pain ..another's prize...oh well:( I did become friendly with the owner and despite requesting these every time they appear on the fish list.....come delivery day....no sb loach.
Sids...what can I say? My sidthimunki investigate every inch of the tank and then go back to see if they missed a spot. Knowing how hard these are to come by I would panic if they were missing! If they ever are I know to check the filter.
Would nylon screening prevent them from entering the filter? I use it to stop jumpers, simulate rain in breeding tanks, in addition to intake baskets to stop plant matter from entering impeler shaft. People also use it to stop some species of fish from digging to the glass bottom....though I let mine do what they want to the tank. Cichlids you see.
