Botia Macracantha - Coloring

Does anyone know why the clown loach's appear to exhibit different shading. I keep 5 of these fish in a 200 (l) tank @79F. Three have deep black stripes while the other two have dull almost charcoal stripes and a lighter yellow shade? Is this hereditary or related to conditions in the tank such as temperature, diet, stress, etc.

Also, the two that have more dull coloration are 6" long while the other three are younger and smaller at 3". (could be just a coincidence).

Any ideas?

Mark
