hillstream loaches

They probably were hillstream loaches, Philip. There are many different types. Hillstream loach is just a catch-all term for loaches that come from mountain streams in S.E. Asia and have some kind of suction mechanism. The common Chinese algae eater is a hillstream loach, but usually isn't thought of as one, presumably because it uses its mouth for suction. Some other common ones are the saddled hillstream loach,(homaloptera orthogoniata) the lizardfish,(homaloptera zollingeri?) the Hong Kong pleco or Chinese butterfly loach,(pseudogastromyzon sp.) and the Borneo sucker.(pseudogastromyzon borneensis or gastromyzon punctulatus) What you saw was probably one of t
