Pleco Problems

A couple weeks ago i bought a few plecos at my LFS. A few weeks later they were lying on the bottom of the tank dead. They had a whitish film on them and their fins were completley deteriorated. The weird thing is that I would see the plecos on the tank wall, looking normal and then I would leave for an hour or two and when I returned they were dead. I have tried to identify what went wrong, but have had no luck. I am wondering if they were just a bad batch or if I should look to different Pleco species or to a different form of algae control altogether. If anyone can help it would be appreciated.
