In Response To: I'm an ....Airhead (BB)

Yep, that's basically it! To my knowledge, venturi is both the principal, and also the jets used - as in carburettor venturi (although they work in the reverse way - fast moving air drops the pressure in the carb, drawing fuel out the venturi and creating an air fuel mix). For powerheads, fast moving water drops the pressure in the venturi, causing air to be drawn in, et voila! - small bubbles!

As far as I can remember (bearing in mind I've only been awake 2 hours without coffee!), some powerheads have this feature built in as you described. Fluval sell a venturi device accessory which is basically a tube of larger diameter on the input side, smaller diameter on the output, with an airline in the constricting part of the tube, and a valve - price approx 4GBP (6USD?) - saves buying a new powerhead!

How fast will the water be moving ? If the flow rate is too high, wouldn't the sand be stirred up, or is that your intention - I would imagine the sand would probably redistribute itself in the lee of large rocks, still, it'll probably attain a "natural" look, which is what you're after ...

keep us posted on how you get on - some piccies posted on the main page would be superb -- BB's (inverted) loach wall-of-death ...
