When I had UG filtration, I'd usually vacuum and do partial water changes weekly. I'd vacuum one half of the tank one week, and the other half the next week.

I may very well be wrong here, but I'm of the *opinion* that once good bacteria is well-established in a tank, it bounces back rapidly after vacuuming.

Occasionally I'd do a complete gravel vacuum over the entire tank. I never had an ammonia spike after doing so. I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has ever experienced just the opposite?
