Salt water - another reason

The physiology of freshwater fish involves keeping the electrolytes inside the fish and keeping the water out. When fish are sick, adding salt to the water is supposed to assist them in making the electrolyte differential between their insides and the water outside lower. At therapeutic concentrations the salt is supposed to decrease the work the fish has to do with its osmoregulatory system and give them a chance to use energy to fight whatever ails them.
This is in addition to the info on keeping the microbial load of the water lower because some organisms are less tolerant of salt than the fish. I don't know about this because bacteria seem to be pretty tough. My impression is that the salt level has to be quite high before bacteria that live in freshwater would be affected in any major way. I welcome contradictory posts on this subject.
