Spot on Wintek. The definition of a buffer is a compound when dissolved in water establishes an equilibrium which either liberates or attacts free H+ ions to maintain a steady concentration of H+ ions (or pH). To change the pH of water you must overwhelm the equilibrium by removing or adding additional or different buffering compounds, so permanently changing the pH. Unfortunately Salt (NaCl) does neither of these things as it doesn't change the concentration of H+ ions present. A better example would be calcium carbonate or baking soda which liberate the carbonate ion (HCO3-) which removes free H+ ions through its equilibrium reaction, so increasing the pH. Blah, Blah, blah.....zzzzzzzzz I'll stop before everyone is bored to death.
Print this and hand it to your lfs as they obviously need all the help they can get! Alistair.
