Dissapearing Kuhlii's

I wonder if anyone else has experienced this, I was cleaning one of my Sponge filters out over the weekend, and when I pulled it apart, (two sponges, one above the other) I found a Kuhli laying on its side on top of the top sponge, about half an inch from the impeller. I thought you poor little guy got caught in the filter couldn't get out and died, so I tried to pick him up and alas he went nuts. He was as healthy as me, and was startled at my presence, he had just been napping....
Then I found another Kuhlii in one of my other tanks same way same place, but this guy's dead, any suggestions/Ideas, are Kuhlii's prone to this sirt of behaviour..
