Common (Fish) Sense

A wise person once said "Common Sense is Neither". How much do you long time fish keepers depend on instinct and how much on your technical stuff like test kits, fish texts etc? I have been keeping fish (again) for almost a year. I wonder in our advise to newbies (my finish is wearing off, I am not entirely new any more) we need to remind people of common sense and instinct? If there is a bad smell, the water needs to be changed, even it the test kits say everything is fine. That kind of thing. Now we all need reminders. If we are changing the water and the last thing we have to take out has wonderful hiding places, we should check it for our clowns before we lay it aside. (Last water change I took the hidey hole out and shook it only to find the clowns were in there. They're fine, my ego is a little bruised. I should know better, show some Common Sense!) What do you think? How much is technical, how much Common Sense and how much is instinct? Jayne
