Frozen Bloody Worms

On Saturday, I bought myself a package of the Hikari frozen blood worms for the first time. To my supprise, they're actually packed in blood; real coagulating, turn-brown-in-the-microwave-because-I-defrosted-them-for-too-long blood.
Anyone know the purpose for this? All blood worms are basically are mosquito larvae, and the blood they are packed in seems to dissipate throughout the tank as soon as the 'block' his the water. This only seems to get the fish's attention, I can't think of what other purpose this might hold.
Furthermore, I paid $8 CDN for it. To me, this seems artifically high. Dr Momfish: what prices do you find for the same product in Ontario?
Other than that, the fish just love it, and it disappears FAST.
Looking for anyone's thoughts on the matter, like how often you feed
