Peat- Is there a difference?

Is there a difference between the peat you buy at the lfs for a cannister filter and the peat you can buy at the local Home Depot labeled sphagnum peat moss.The price difference is unbelievable. Also is any carbon better than another or is it all the same? I have a fluval 403.
