Unfortunately ick can cause a lot of damage to the gills of a fish. You think you've gotten your fish over the infection and then they surprise you by dying anyway. Scarred gills don't work too well.

We have one loach who sustained gill damage from ick. His brethren are all over 4 inches long now. Stimpy is still only 2 inches long and pale. But he's alive, he eats and he hangs out with the other loaches.
