Hi, Alistair: I also have a 20 gal. tank, with veil mollys, 1 (Fat) gold fish, 2 weather loaches, 3 Kulli's, 2 Frogs, 1 Rainbow Shark, 1 Pleco and 4 Clowns. I start with 2 of them, then i bougth a third one and 2 weeks after the last one. As Robert said these are wonderful and WEIRD fish, when i had 2 they where inseparable and fine, then i read they are school fish and bougth an other one, and these is very rare but they was taking turns to play two at a time while the other one was naping, i never saw the 3 of them swiming together. At a point, one of them stay hided for days, and wasn't coming out even to eat, i check them carefully and realise they weren't sick. So i bougth the fourt one for them to make pairs, Now they seem happier and the other one is coming out more often, BUT i realise why some time's one of them is hiding, !!the Rainbow Sharkˇˇ these are inofensive but territorial fish and love to run after the Clowns, this poor ones are very nervous fish and if bottered they will hide even for days. So in my case the problem wasn't the quantity of clowns, it was the nasty shark, if you buy just one more i'm sure they will do fine because they will feel safer in a bunch. Here's my advise, look carefully if one of your other fish's is not bottering them, if so, do wath i did bring the agresive one back to the pet store and your problem will be solved, but any way don't expect a normal behaivor from the clowns cause they are CRAZY and that's what make them interesting and lovable fish. I hope this advise will help you (and don't pay attention to rude comments.) You are doing it great. Good luck.. y adios amigo.
