Calcified Sex Organs Cardinal!

Not a torture used in the Spanish Inquisition, but something I read in Practical Fishkeeping that got the grey-cells going. Someone asked their experts about breeding Cardinal Tetras and the reply said that whilst soft, acid water is needed it is important that Breeding-stock is raised in similar conditions, as in hard water the sexual organs of the fish get calcified, rendering the fish infertile.

Don't think I'd like my bits turning to chalk (mind you, you'd always have something to write with!), but it did get me thinking that if the same effect happened to other species that naturally inhabit pretty soft water, then maybe someone migh
