Neophyte question- what is ick?

Alright, this may sound like a stupid question, but what exactly is 'ick?' I can't find an FAQ on this anywhere. I've had 2 clowns in my planted, 30 gal. eclipse setup for about 6 weeks and all of a sudden one of them lost its color, developed a number of pale spots on the fins and body, and then died. The second one has developed similar symptoms, also exhibiting what I would describe as a general lack of motivation. The problem appears to have now spread to one of my red minor tetras. There have been no sudden changes in ph or temperature, but I have not checked nitrate levels.
Does any of this sound like ick?
