What about copper?

Hi! Everyone! I have read all the pros and cons of copper and decided to use it at a low level preventively in my 55 gallon tank after my chinese algae eater who had previously been very active and plump died suddenly. My botias show no sign of illness of any kind but I didn't want to take a chance with their health so I did a water change (that was due) and added copper at half strength. My baby skunks that are now about an inch and a half long freeked out! One hid under a rock that had no space for hiding but he forced himself under there anyway. Another started jerking around all over the place. I was so upset! I know that not many people like skunks but I am very attached to mine...so far they are precious animated little guys.
