What's with the white rocks?

My clown loaches lately seem to be fascinated with the white gravel in the tank (the substrate is a mixed size, mixed color gravel - mostly brown and tan with a bit of red and white here and there.) I've noticed that in one part of the tank, the white rocks have been accumulating at the top of the gravel.
I didn't think much of it until one of my smaller loaches (about 2.5 inches) swam around with a white rock in his mouth for 3 or 4 days, dropping it to eat and then picking it up again when the food was gone.
Has anyone else observed behavior like this in their clowns? What are they trying to tell me?
