What PH and what Hardness for Clowns ?

Hi To Yo All,

I have never been able to establish what is the best water hardness for clowns and what PH should it be? The water in Brussels is quite hard, and a natural ( or not ) Ph of about 7.6. Is this too high? I just added a nice clown who was bright orange and black in the LFS and he seems to be greying out. Could this be the ph &Or hardness. The fish books I have are rather brief on clowns. Adding salt has helped perk things up a bit... And IF the water is too hard, how can I soften it gently .I tried a meat tenderiser in the tank water, but like King Knut, I just got wet ;~)

Many thanks.
