Have to start over

Well, my two newest clown loaches, purchased a bit over two weeks ago, both died over the holiday weekend. They were in a quarantine tank (thank goodness) and I thought were doing well ... eating, active, etc., despite being treated for ick. Can ick get ahold of fish and be much worse than it looks, maybe before it's noticed? They were lying on their sides, breathing very rapidly and appeared to have extra amounts of slime, sort of in patches. One was dead when I got up, and I later put the other down after trying every emergency measure I could find to try to save him (from The Manual of Fish Health and The Aquarium Problem Solver).
