Hi Bethany, I had the same problem with my biggest loach, spot ( 6-7"). When I put a smaller one in (5") he went paler than normal and more or less stayed that way. Then I put some smaller ones in ( 3" ) and the medium one went from jet black to pale, but not AS pale as the biggest one. The smallest ones are jet black and electric orange! This greying out is strange. I am not sure if it is all stress. It may be some kind of signalling as to who is chief. It is certainly not the biggest one, as he is bossed about my the others.
