Climbing SaddleBack Loaches

ok - I am trying to make sense of what happened with all the evidence I have...

I have a 180L community tank tat has an external cannister filter

the WHOLE of the tank is like covered with glass except for the inlet / outlet of the canister filter pipes - which leaves about a 8x8 right angle trangle space open in the back left corner of the tank

I acquired a beautiful 3 inch saddleback loach (should have bought more then one but only bought one anyways) and he was in there for lie 3 -5 days no problems - in fact he seemed quite happy with the rest of the fishes.

freaky thing happened - one morning I found him dried up about 1/2 foot infront of the front left corner of the tank

how the hell did he get out? had he been climbing up the heater or something - or are they
