You didn't waste much time replying, either!!! My thinking at the moment is that your loach may be infested with an internal parasite that lives in the stomach and intestines - they may eat like pigs but start to waste away. I could be completely wrong. There is a product called levamisole available from animal feed stores or veterinary surgeons (not sure whether it is a prescriptive treatment or not) - anyway, it's primarily used to treat sheep for much the same problem.
