I thought it was mainly the big apple snails that carried most of the diseases. My loaches have been feasting on snails from all my other tanks (I do as you do and gather them up and give them to the loaches as a treat) and they don't appear to have caught any nasty diseases from them. As you say, they dolove them and it's so much fun to watch them swim around with a snails in their mouths and tug-o-war over them - and mine don't even get garlic butter!
