Preparing Peat Moss for "kuhli" Loach Tanks

I've read suggestions for using peat moss to create an artificial mud bottom for "kuhli"-type loaches, but I've never seen instructions for ways of going about this. I know using peat moss isn't necessary for keeping them, but has anyone ever tried this, or heard ways to go about it? I want to set up a tank just for "kuhli" loaches (the species depends on which I can find in the stores) with lots of plants, and would like to make it as natural for them as possible. Any experiences with & information about preparing peat moss, or especially reasons NOT to use it, would be appreciated.
