Swordtails

My little brother wanted me to post a question on how to keep swordtail babies alive the best. He now has twelve babies. 10 are newborns and 2 are from about 3 weeks ago. What should he feed them, and what size can they be before releasing them into his tank? We noticed that some of them have black tails. Does this mean that they are males(we have noticed that most swordtail males have black tails including his two males)?
