Hi there! I think that the size of all the fish in the tank is more important than the number- as long as the fish have plenty of aeration, enough food to go around (you may consider feeding 2x daily to take into account diff. feeding habits) and good water conditions, overcrowding should not be a problem. You also have to look at the compatability factor; a three inch Oscar, for instance, might work in a community tank until he grows a bit, then there would definitely be problems with less aggressive fish, especially if the tank was too small for them to escape!!!
