Using antibiotics in an established tank

I have had a few unexplained deaths of danios in my tank and I suspect a bacterial infection (dead fish were considerably darker then usual, water quality fine, temp fine, no obvious body marks or swelling). I was going to treat the tank with a commercial wide spectrum antibiotic which alledgely does not harm the tank filter bacteria. Does anyone else have experience of using these treatments? I know of at least one incidence were a product such as this distroyed a filter and I am not keen to find it happening to mine.
