Attention all experienced fishkeepers: What kind of filtration is best?

I am ready to order my filter and heater from a catalog. I have got a heater picked out for my 55 gallon, but am confused on filters. Would it be better to get a canister filter, or an undergravel filter, and a back filter? If I did the undergravel filter I would get a marineland back filter and a Penn Plax undergravel filter. I don't know what the best brand for a canister filter is so what would you suggest? How many GPH's would I need to get in a canister filter for a 55 gallon tank?
