Have a good look at the new Fluvals. There are advertisements now in the recent editions of various fish magazines. They are designed more along the lines of an Eheim and seem to have worked out the 'bugs' compared to the older designs. With a 55 gallon tank, a Fluval 303 or the newer 304 would be plenty. Use at least 2 spray bars so that the current is reduced.
The only major drag about using canister filters is getting the air out of them after each reset but they are reasonably efficient and quiet.
