I'm unsure why it (the "wearing away" of barbels) would occur with my Corys in the past. It didn't matter what type of gravel I used (I used *many* different varieties -- all were very smooth), the stocking level of the aquarium, water change schedule (keeping nitrAtes very low), UGF or not. It drove me *nuts* until I went with sand. It was the only thing that worked for me, so naturally I only use sand now with my Corys. Other people I know of had the same problem. Surprisingly, even Cory breeders (that used *no* substrate) had this problem. My thinking is that this condition can be caused by a number of factors including the wrong substrate, poor water quality, disease, and perhaps nutritional factors.
IME, yes, some species seemed to be prone to this condition more than others, especially "mid-sized" Corys (e.g. C. arcuatus or "Skunk Corydoras")
Good luck with your filtration selection!
