In the spotlight

When I got my newest loach and other fishes, I was told that I should leave the light on for the tank about 10 hours a day (mainly for the live plants). I hadn't done this before...only turning it on for a few hours in the evening for feeding time...but I had very hardy plants which seemed to be able to take it. The new plants I'm not sure about. The past couple of days I've left the light on during the day but feel uncomfortable with it. Do fish not mind being in the spotlight all the time? I don't think they'd get so much light in their natural environment.
