Sand for my aquarium

I was wondering if i could put sand in my aquarium. My sister has some sand from a vollyball court and i was wondering if i could put that in my aquarium and would the fish like it. Would the sand change the water properties of the water, i would think it would raise the PH, and increase the hardness. I was also wondering if i would have to clean the sand be for i pur it in the aquarium and also would the sand be sucked up when i do water changes? My fish are 3 clown loackes, 4 kulie loaches, 1 angelfish, 1 gold nugget pleco and one common pleco. Any info will be helpfull.
